DVT: Tips for Travelers

You've likely heard that sitting in the same position for an extended period of time can increase your risk for developing a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). For this reason, DVT is often referred to as Economy Class Syndrome. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to travel safely.

If you'll be on a plane or riding in a car for extended period of time, try the following:
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes.
  • Drink plenty of water in order to stay hydrated.
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages.
  • When sitting, shift your weight on a frequent basis.
  • If possible, get up and walk around. In a plane, you can walk up and down the aisles. If you are in a car, pull over frequently to stretch your legs.
Also, if you have a history of blood clots, ask your doctor about compression stockings.

While flying recently, I sat next to a doctor who gave me some excellent exercises to do to prevent DVT. Here are his tips:
Walk to the bathroom once an hour.
While in your plane seat, flex and point your toes at least 25 times every half hour.
If you are at risk for developing DVT, wear compression stockings on a plane.
Hope that helps!
